The soup is so cold that its diversity is low, but the cold-water specialists that are adapted to it do incredibly well. That’s how the thick, green soup that feeds the Gulf’s food web gets made. At the surface, microscopic plants called phytoplankton combine those nutrients with the sunlight of the lengthening spring days to reproduce like mad. Whipped by that vortex, and churned by the largest tides in the world (52 feet in one bay), the Gulf of Maine acts like a giant blender, constantly whisking nutrients up off the bottom, where they generally settle. (I’m looking at you, Old Orchard Beach!) Meanwhile, frigid, nutrient-rich water from off the coasts of Labrador and Nova Scotia feeds into the Gulf through a deep channel and gets sucked into the powerful counterclockwise currents. Warm water surging up the East Coast glances off those banks and heads for Europe, bypassing the Gulf of Maine and leaving it shockingly cold. A submerged ridge between Cape Cod and the tip of Nova Scotia turns it into a nearly self-contained bowl. On a map,the Gulf of Maine looks like an unremarkable bulge of the North Atlantic, but it is unique. He saw dead chicks and piles of rotting butterfish everywhere. Then he checked the other 64 burrows he was tracking: Only 31 percent had successfully fledged. It’s normal to have some chicks die.” Puffins successfully raise chicks 77 percent of the time, and Petey’s parents had a good track record Kress assumed they were just unlucky. “But we thought, ‘Well, that’s nature.’ They don’t all live. “When he died, there was a huge outcry from viewers,” Kress tells me. On July 20, Petey expired in front of a live audience. Eventually, he began moving less and less. For weeks, his parents kept bringing him butterfish, and he kept struggling. Petey tries again and again, but he never manages it. The video is absurd and tragic, because the butterfish is wider than the little gray fluff ball, who keeps tossing his head back, trying to choke down the fish, only to drop it, shaking with the effort. Kress watched Petey repeatedly pick up butterfish and try to swallow them. But Petey’s parents brought him mostly butterfish, which are shaped more like saucers. Puffins dine primarily on hake and herring, two teardrop-shaped fish that have always been abundant in the Gulf of Maine. Researchers would get to watch live puffin feeding behavior for the first time, and schoolkids around the world would be falling for Petey.īut Kress soon noticed that something was wrong. Puffin parents dote on their single chick, sheltering it in a two-foot burrow beneath rocky ledges and bringing it piles of small fish each day. Now, thanks to a grant from the Annenberg Foundation, the Puffin Cam offered new opportunities for research and outreach. By 2013, about 1,000 puffin pairs were nesting in Maine. Project Puffin transplanted young puffins from Newfoundland to several islands in Maine, and after years of effort the colonies were reestablished and the project became one of Audubon’s great success stories. Puffins, whose orange bills and furrowed eyes make them look like penguins dressed as sad clowns, used to nest on many islands off the Maine coast, but 300 years of hunting for their meat, eggs, and feathers nearly wiped them out. The “Puffin Cam” capturing baby Petey’s every chirp had been set up on Maine’s Seal Island by Stephen Kress, “The Puffin Man,” who founded the Audubon Society’s Project Puffin in 1973. The new poster childfor climate change had his coming-out party in June 2012, when Petey the puffin chick first went live into thousands of homes and schools all over the world.

This also brings out the benefits of the hub scheme - With daisy chaining no longer in the picture for most deployments (each spoke in the hub can still be a daisy chain in Thunderbolt 4), users do not need to worry about the placement of different Thunderbolt peripherals / displays in the chain. The intent is to route the incoming display signals from the host to one of the downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, and then on to a HDMI monitor. Plugable also bundles a USBC-HDMI adapter (USB-C male to HDMI 2.0 female converter supporting DisplayPort Alternate Mode from the USB-C side) with the package. The hub tips the scales at 201g, light enough to be considered pocketable. Despite the small size, the unit has a solid look and feel with its brushed finish. The main hub itself is quite tiny compared to the power brick, measuring just 118 mm x 18 mm x 73 mm. The TBT4-HUB3C comes with a 0.8m passive Thunderbolt 4 cable, a 110W power brick, and a bundled USB-C to HDMI adapter supporting resolutions up to 4Kp60 with HDR. The JHL8440 Goshen Ridge controller used in the hub is a quad-port solution - one upstream, and three downstream ports. These cables complement the Thunderbolt 4 flagship from Plugable - the Goshen Ridge-based TBT4-HUB3C. The pricing premium is due to increased certification costs (the factory is required to get random manufacturing lots repeatedly tested for Thunderbolt 4 cables, compared to only the initial manufacturing run previously). The TBT4-40G2M (active) and TBT4-40G1M (passive) are Intel-certified Thunderbolt 4 cables, priced at $59 ($49 after coupon application) and $34 ($29 after coupon application) respectively. Active cables up to 2m in length and supporting up to 40Gbps speeds - maximum possible based on the host / device interfaces (Thunderbolt 3 active cables with non-Thunderbolt 3 Type-C devices are often limited to USB 2.0 speeds).Hub functionality in addition to the daisy-chaining scheme prevalent in previous Thunderbolt versions. It is these new features that Plugable is focusing on: In fact, under the hood, the specifications were being fine-tuned to bring in some features from the USB world. As peak bandwidth (40Gbps) didn't get an upgrade over Thunderbolt 3, many consumers just considered it a branding update. Intel had provided detailed updates on Thunderbolt 4 in mid-2020 before releasing it in Tiger Lake-based products. Joining it are two Thunderbolt 4 cables - the 2m. Plugable is introducing its Thunderbolt 4 product lineup today, with the TBT4-HUB3C Thunderbolt 4 Hub leading the pack. While the original game launched on PlayStation 4, this was because it was announced for that platform before Microsoft purchased Obsidian. Because Obsidian is now owned by Microsoft, The Outer Worlds 2 should release into Xbox Game Pass on day one. Obsidian did not announce a release date or platforms, but it will likely release on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. The Outer Worlds 2 appears to be early in development, as indicated by its reveal trailer. The Outer Worlds 2: Release date and platforms To keep things consistent, we may be seeing the return of the Board in some way, but that's merely speculation. In order to save the failing Halcyon colony, players took on the mega-corporations that ran everything. The first game was set hundreds of years in the future as humanity expanded colonies across the galaxy. We don't know anything about the story in The Outer Worlds 2 except that it will feature a "new solar system, new crew, same Outer Worlds," according to the trailer description. Source: Obsidian (Image credit: Source: Obsidian) Of these weapons, we're hoping to see Science weapons and Unique weapons make a return as they offered special abilities that normal weapons did not. The Outer Worlds also allowed players to upgrade any of the weapons and armor they earned while exploring. For instance, if you want to carry a large amount of items without being over-encumbered, you'll invest in your Strength attribute. Though we haven't seen any real gameplay footage of The Outer Worlds 2, you can expect it to look much like the original, but probably with enhanced graphics and textures.Įxpanding on the original, The Outer Worlds 2 is expected to let players create their own character by selecting various attributes, perks, and skills they'd like to focus on. In its announcement trailer, we see characters that have some form of rocket-powered boots. It plays very much like Fallout, in that regard. Like its predecessor, The Outer Worlds 2 features primarily first-person gameplay, allowing players to use a variety of melee and ranged weapons in combat. Regardless, players end up learning that all contact with Earth has been lost. Depending on your choices, the game can end in a few different ways. The trunk will remain free of branches until some distance up the tree on forest grown trees, while individuals grown in the open are shorter and thicker with a more rounded crown. The trunk diameter often ranges from 46 to 88 cm (18 to 35 in) depending on the growing conditions, however, open grown trees can attain diameters of up to 153 centimetres (60 in). The leaves are usually 9 to 11 centimetres ( 3 1⁄ 2 to 4 1⁄ 4 in) long on a full-grown tree. It is a medium to large sized tree, reaching heights of 27 to 38 metres (90 to 120 ft) and exceptionally over 41 metres (135 feet) in the southern Appalachians where conditions favor its growth. rubrum is usually easy to identify, it is highly changeable in morphological characteristics. Typical fall foliage in red maple country. By removing red maple from a young forest recovering from disturbance, the natural cycle of forest regeneration is altered, changing the diversity of the forest for centuries to come. In a mature or old growth northern hardwood forest, red maple only has a sparse presence, while shade tolerant trees such as sugar maples, beeches, and hemlocks thrive. The red maple can be considered weedy or even invasive in young, highly disturbed forests, especially frequently logged forests. It is also the state tree of Rhode Island. It is used commercially on a small scale for maple syrup production as well as for its medium to high quality lumber. Due to its attractive fall foliage and pleasing form, it is often used as a shade tree for landscapes. It grows well from sea level to about 900 m (3,000 ft). It can be found growing in swamps, on poor dry soils, and almost anywhere in between. Over most of its range, red maple is adaptable to a very wide range of site conditions, perhaps more so than any other tree in eastern North America. Among these features, however, it is best known for its brilliant deep scarlet foliage in autumn. Its flowers, petioles, twigs and seeds are all red to varying degrees. At maturity, it often attains a height of around 30 m (100 ft). Many of its features, especially its leaves, are quite variable in form. The red maple ranges from southeastern Manitoba around the Lake of the Woods on the border with Ontario and Minnesota, east to Newfoundland, south to Florida, and southwest to East Texas. Forest service recognizes it as the most abundant native tree in eastern North America. ex Nutt.) SmallĪcer rubrum, the red maple, also known as swamp, water or soft maple, is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of eastern and central North America. Acer hypoleucum K.Koch 1869 not Hayata 1913 Best defense Packers will face: Steelers, Week 10 Defensive coordinator Joe Barry’s D might be in for a long Sunday night. Kansas City lost Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster this offseason, but they still have Mahomes and arguably the best tight end in NFL history in Travis Kelce, along with former Packers wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling and promising young pieces in receiver Kadarius Toney and running back Isiah Pacheco. The Chiefs led the NFL in points per game (29.2) last season, then they marched on to win their second Lombardi Trophy in Patrick Mahomes’ five years as a starter. They’re the Super Bowl champions, plain and simple. What better way to maintain order in the rivalry and for the first-year starter to silence any doubt, at least for one week, than winning in Chicago.Īaron Rodgers to Bears fans during Packers' win in Chicago: 'I own you' Best offense Packers will face: Chiefs, Week 13 If the Packers lose the first game of the Love era to the Bears, the noise from Chicago will be deafening. Since then, the Packers have won eight consecutive games against the Bears to keep Matt LaFleur undefeated against Green Bay’s biggest rival as the head coach. The Packers haven’t lost to the Bears since their second matchup in the 2018 season, in which Chicago eliminated Green Bay from playoff contention with a 24-17 win. One game Packers can’t afford to lose: at Bears, Week 1 Lions quarterback Jared Goff proved last year he’s not washed up just yet. This year’s first matchup with the Fightin’ Dan Campbells comes in Week 4 in Green Bay on Thursday Night Football. Detroit beat Green Bay twice last season, including at Lambeau Field in Week 18 to eliminate the Packers from playoff contention after they had won four straight games to keep their hopes alive. The Packers, and especially their fans, can’t look at the Lions on the schedule and automatically Sharpie in a win anymore. That’s three straight weeks in which the Packers will be the only game going, and all four games are against solid opponents. The toughest stretch is probably Weeks 11 through 14, when the Packers host the Chargers, visit the upstart Lions on Thanksgiving, host the defending champion Chiefs on Sunday Night Football and visit the Giants on Monday Night Football. Green Bay doesn’t face a 2022 playoff team until Week 8, when the division-rival Vikings come to Lambeau Field. On paper, the Packers have a relatively easy schedule if we’re going off how their opponents performed last season. Rodgers just said Davante Adams is now the best player he's played with. Packers All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander had many a training camp battle with Adams, and we should get the treat of a few more in prime time in Sin City.Īaron Rodgers has said for a while that Charles Woodson is the best player he's played with. Adams played eight seasons for the Packers, rising from beleaguered youngster struggling with drops to the NFL’s best wide receiver before they traded him to the Raiders in March 2022. Add in the element of Davante Adams facing his longtime former team for the first time and this game becomes even more enticing. It’s “Monday Night Football” in Las Vegas - that’s must-watch material already. He emphasized Wednesday the importance of learning to simply find completions instead of “take those big shots or force the ball into areas” that his arm is probably capable of when they’re not readily available. For Love, the key to starting 1-0 will be protecting the football. It’ll be fascinating to see if new starting quarterback Jordan Love can carry on the success Rodgers had against the Bears, as the Packers were 24-5 against them with Rodgers at the helm. The Packers play the Bears in Week 1, so the primary key to victory is simply to show up. Here's what you need to know Week 1 keys to victory Finding NFL games on TV in 2023 could be confusing. |
